mister asked 9 years ago

I have been prescribed propranolol by a doctor. I forgot to ask why it has been prescribed to me. Can you tell me what was the purpose of prescribing this drug to me?
I shall be thankful.

Thank you for asking the question and welcome to AskWebDr.com.
I am Dr. Adil Ramzan.
Propranolol is a beta blocker, the function of this drug is to reduce the heart rate and force of contraction. This action of propranolol helps to decrease the blood pressure. So this drug is basically placed in the category of anti-hypertensive drugs. Antihypertensive drugs are those drugs which are used to decrease the blood pressure. So propranolol is used to decrease the blood pressure. But in some cases low dose of propranolol is also used in the management of anxiety and migraine.
Here i don’t know your symptoms in detail, so I can’t tell you why it has been prescribed to you, but most probably it was prescribed to you because your blood pressure was high.
Please reply back if you have any further question.
Best regards.
