Thank you, Katie for asking the question.
I am Dr. Adil Ramzan.
You have stage I hypertension. Its the early stage and your doctor is right about changing you dietary and exercise habits. Your BMI is high, it should be less than 25. So, in stage 1 hypertension, our goal is to decrease the blood pressure through lifestyle changes. You should start taking low sodium/salt diet, a low cholesterol/fat diet, don’t eat fried things. Add more vegetables. Decrease your wieght, increase your duration of aerobics. The following article of mine explains the benefits of aerobics.

And you are right, hypertension is bad for health, it may cause organ damage with the passage of time. But at this time you should concentrate on keeping your blood pressure within an optimum range, your target should be around 130-135/80-85. So you just need to do a little effort and i am sure you will achieve the goal.
Best of luck.
If you have any further question, please feel free to ask.

Best Regards.
