Dear doctor
Thank you for your time.
I am Furrukh, 55-year-old, from Karachi, I have lower abdominal pain, and urinary problem, i have to wake up 3 to 4 times during the night. I went to doctor, he did ultrasound of abdomen and said that my prostate is enlarged. He prescribed me a medicine called flomax and referred me to urology for biopsy. Should i go for biopsy? What is your advice?

Thank you furrukh for asking the question.
You have got significant prostate enlargement slightly earlier then expected. Nearly 70% of males c/o prostate enlargement by the age of 65. Anyhow, as your doctor has advised you to go for biopsy then you should go. Before that, i will also advise you to have a PSA (prostate specific antigen” test first. It will further help in the diagnosis. Probably, your urologist will advise this test prior to go for biopsy. Biopsy will help in excluding prostate cancer. Prostate cancer has good prognosis if detected earlier, so your doctor is more careful and wants to rule out any prostate malignancy, which is a good approach and i agree with it. Have an opinion of a urologist and do what he says, but it is better to rule out malignancy with the help of biopsy, as your ultrasound has already indicated significant prostate enlargement.

Best Regards.
