Bicarbonate replacement formula – with Examples – How to replace bicarbonate.

Sodium bicarbonate is a base when its concentration in blood increases the pH also increases and becomes more basic. When its concentration in the blood decreases pH decreases too and becomes more acidic.

Sodium bicarbonate must not be over-replaced, it may cause cerebral edema or in some cases, severe metabolic alkalosis.

The general rule to replace bicarbonate is;

Corrected Reticulocyte Count for RBCs Formula or Absolute reticulocyte count

In case of anemia, corrected reticulocyte count for Red blood cells or absolute reticulocyte count must be used instead of simple reticulocyte percentage because reticulocyte percentage is simply the ratio of reticulocytes to red blood cells, which may give a falsely high reading of reticulocyte percentage when the number of RBCs is low. Let's have an [...]

How Rapidly Should Hyponatremia Be Corrected? Hyponatremia Correction Rate

Hyponatremia ReferenceHyponatremia Hyponatremia is defined as serum sodium concentration of less than 135mEq/L. Mild Hyponatremia: Serum Sodium: 130-134 mEq/L Moderate Hyponatremia: Serum Sodium: 125-129 mEq/L Severe Hyponatremia: Serum Sodium: < 125 mEq/L Correction Rate If a patient has mild hyponatremia, then only water restriction may improve the serum sodium concentration. If the duration of hyponatremia is less [...]
