Medical QuestionsCategory: PregnancyHad unprotected sex, can i be pregnant?
Anonymous asked 9 years ago

Dear doctor,
I am 24 year old girl, with no medical history, i had an unprotected sexual intercourse with my boyfriend. I never used a contraceptive before, and i have googled a lot about it and i learned that having sexual intercourse right after your menses ends doesn’t result in pregnancy. My menses ended a day before sexual intercourse. So i want to know what to do, it has been 5 days, and i know now an emergency contraceptive won’t help. So in such case can you tell me and guide me what to do. ? keeping in view of my current history, what do you think? what are the chances of me of being pregnant?
I will really appreciate a reply.
Best Regards.

Thank you for asking the question.
I am Dr. Adil Ramzan.
During the menstrual cycle, there is a time which is more favorable for pregnancy and there is a time which is not suitable for pregnancy, this time period, which is not suitable if you want to have a baby is called “safe period”.

Safe period is the time just after the end of menses or just before the expected date of start of menstruation. If you have an unprotected sex in the time period, that is within 2-4 days after the end of the bleeding or within 2-3 days before the expected date of start of menstruation, then the chances of getting pregnant are very very low. As you had sex just a day after the end of menses, so then chances of getting pregnant are very very low, almost negligible, but one must be careful, so have a pregnancy test after 10-12 days.
The most favorable time for pregnancy is mid of the menstrual cycle when ovulation occurs.
I hope it will help you. If you have any further question feel free to ask.

Best Regards.
