Medical QuestionsCategory: PainI believe I have Sciatica, now what?
Cera asked 8 years ago

I fractured my right tibia, had surgery when 4 stainless steel screws and a. Titanium rod were placed in my leg. Now, I have pain in my right butt bone that is sometimes so bad I can barely move. I am guessing static nerve pain most likely associated with one leg being shorter or longer because of the surgery. I have asked my primary for an MRI and he just sent me for X-rays. I did not go because I went to see a chiropractor and the first visit she did free X-rays and discussed that I do have scoliosis in my lower spine. Now what should I do? This pain is starting to become chronic.

Thank you, Cera, for asking the question.
Sciatic nerve pain usually starts from the hip and runs down to toe. It radiates from hip to toe of the affected side. Your doctor didn’t send you for MRI because you have stainless steel rods and screws placed inside your body. So Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is avoided in such cases.
I would like to know what your X-Ray report shows, are there any signs of degenerative joint disease, as it may be a cause, moreover, if it is sciatica then physiotherapy should be continued along with bone health minerals and vitamins (Vit D, C and Calcium). Painkillers can be taken for pain relief. If osteoporosis is the cause then bisphosphonates (name of a drugs) may offer some help. In short we need to find out the exact cause and start a treatment specific to it, treatment includes, pain killers, physiotherapy, biphosphonates, epidural steroids injuections and surgery.
I hope this information will help you..
If you have any further question. Please feel free to reply.
Best Regards.
