Thank you for asking the question.
A painless lump in the neck could b a lymph node. Associated sore throat or cold could cause enlargement of lymph nodes which are usually felt under the chin, under the jaw, just lateral to the windpipe. The size of lymph nodes maters, if it is greater then 2 centimetres it should be evaluated. less than 2 centimetres in the presence of flue, cold or sore throat could be infection-related. Viral infection are more common and self-limiting. but its best to get yourself evaluated, get a blood complete profile done to check the white blood cell count which is usually elevated in the presence of bacterial infection. I would also guide towards making a diagnosis. the doctor will examine your throat to check if there is any congestion, swelling of tonsils or if you need antibiotics.
I hope this information is helpful.
