Medical QuestionsCategory: OtherNumbness in fingers
Barb Cox asked 5 years ago

I recently have developed numbness in my thumb, index, and middle fingers of my right hand. Sometimes when I sit in a recliner, my entire hand will go numb. And when i reposition myself, the numbness reverts back to the three fingers mentioned. Not sure what kind of doctor to see – chiropractor, orthopedic hand specialist, kiniesiologist, cardiologist, or someone else. I am a 64 year old female with hypothroidism, Chrohn’s disease

Thank you for asking the question. Your symptoms are suggestive of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome due to compression of the median nerve of the right hand. In order to diagnose, NCS (nerve conduction studies) are done. Please contact your doctor for the definitive diagnosis. Moreover, numbness of the hand after sitting on a recliner for a long time and improvement after the change of position is not so worrisome, as ulnar nerve passes near the elbow and when you sit for long a time you may compress it, and once you change the position the compression disappears and your symptoms improve, so it is a normal phenomenon and may occur in any person.  See you doctor for proper examination and diagnosis.
Best regards.
